MSNBC, CNN and Fox News Channel are, in large part, political talk channels and seek experts to help fill the time. Being on call to opine can be lucrative work; several reports had NBC agreeing to pay McDaniel $300,000 a year. Even NBC News, whose MSNBC cable outlet appeals to liberals, has more than a dozen Republican contributors. Fox held separate pre-Iowa town halls for DeSantis and Haley, but at 6 p.m. before prime time. Frustration boiled over when DeSantis' campaign manager, James Uthmeier, felt that a Fox graphic didn't show the extent of the candidate's appearances in Iowa. Asked by Ainsley Earhardt if she would withdraw if she lost New Hampshire, Haley said she would not. “I don't care how much y'all want to coronate Donald Trump,” Haley said. “I don't need any advice from RINO Kayleigh McEnany on Fox,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, referencing the conservative slur Republican in Name Only.

ABC and NBC's streaming services carried a part of Trump live, then left and corrected some of what Trump said. Live coverage of events is the go-to move for cable networks, which thrive on a sense of urgency. “Saturday Night Live” opened its show last week with a spoof of one of those news conferences. Fox News' Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters both did segments on rivals' decisions not to show Trump's Iowa speech in full. On MSNBC Wednesday, Trump's speech received far more attention on “Morning Joe” than it had the night before.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris is taking center stage in the Democrats' renewed push for abortion rights during this year's election and she will mark the 51st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling on Monday in Wisconsin. The White House has repeatedly turned to Harris, the first woman to serve as vice president, to make its case. Although he is a longtime supporter of abortion rights, he mentions less often and sometimes avoids using the word abortion even when he discusses the issue. Abortion has reshaped Harris' tenure as vice president after earlier struggles when dealing with intractable issues like migration from Central America. “The president and the vice president appeal to different parts of the party," Simmons said.

Yuri Gripas | ReutersFormer President Donald Trump has grown "increasingly sour" on Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and the overall leadership of the RNC, according to a person close to the former president. "I do think if there's enough pressure from us and Trump, McDaniel might just decide, 'this is humiliating,' and step down." During a recent interview with conservative commentator Rogan O'Handley, Bannon asked O'Handley what he would like to say to Trump about McDaniel. Beyond the latest slate of Republican losses, the Republican National Committee also appears to be lagging behind the Democratic National Committee in overall fundraising.

ATLANTA (AP) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering a ban on certain hair-straightening chemicals that have been used by Black women for years and that research shows may increase the risk of uterine cancer. But Black hair stylists say such products — specifically the ones being looked at by the FDA, which contain formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals — have fallen out of favor, especially among younger generations. The possible rule would apply to both salon-grade and at-home products, FDA spokesperson Courtney Rhodes said. Pressley said in an Oct. 6 statement that the FDA's possible action is “a win for public health — especially the health of Black women." The risks for Black women could shift with better regulation of chemical hair straighteners, said Dr. Kimberly Bertrand, an author of the Boston University study.

Donald Trump accused Kayleigh McEnany of citing the "wrong" poll numbers on Fox News. McEnany was an ardent Trump loyalist, and served as White House press secretary for much of 2020. In a post on Truth Social page, Trump accused McEnany of citing the "wrong" poll numbers on Fox News and suggested that she was a "RINO," or "Republican in name only." "Kayleigh 'Milktoast' McEnany just gave out the wrong poll numbers on FoxNews," Trump wrote. An Emerson College poll released last Thursday said Trump had a 42 point lead over his rivals in Iowa.

Sarah Matthews testified the White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was avoiding Trump after the election. McEnany was concerned about violating the Hatch Act from the White House podium, Matthews said. The aide, Sarah Matthews, was serving as the White House deputy press secretary at the time of the 2020 election. McEnany was serving as both the White House press secretary and Trump's campaign spokesperson at the time. The transcript of Matthews' testimony was released by the January 6 committee on Thursday, along with the testimony of Chris Krebs, Mark Esper, and others.
The January 6 committee released a new trove of transcripts on Thursday. Among them was an interview with former White House communications aide Sarah Matthews. Matthews shed light on her process for figuring out which tweets Trump sent out himself. Ultimately, in the February 8, 2022 interview, she told the committee that it was "painfully obvious" when Trump decided to tweet on his own. "The phrasing of it, the capitalization of letters," she continued, adding that Scavino's drafted tweets were "more grammatically correct."
Former Trump WH staffer Sarah Matthews described tension in the press office as January 6 unfolded. She said an aide argued that Trump shouldn't condemn violence because the media would "win." The aide, Chad Gilmartin, now works for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. She added that White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was "receptive" to the idea. Gilmartin now works as a communications adviser for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who appears likely to be the next Speaker of the House.
